My photography is a visual and conceptual commentary about coming of age in a unsettled and uncertain world. Where the increased turmoil of society has a profound and often unacknowledged impact on the individual.
Experiences in our lives, both positive and negative, form who we are and reside in us as thoughts and memories. The work speaks of these thoughts and memories and how these change over time.
[ concept ]
One of the strengths and challenges of this work is that it is created intuitively with a degree of immediacy. Thoughts or memories tend to be a catalyst for beginning a new work. It is as I work intuitively and with only a vague idea that a common concept begins to appear and, it is through the reflection of these completed works that the actual meaning becomes clear. Conceptually my work addresses the difficulties surrounding coming of age in a increasingly corrupt world - a reflection of particular memories I have regarding my experiences with these issues and how the memories of these change over time.
The process entailed in my photography is very important and integral with the concept. Every event of every day and each person we come into contact with leaves a mark on us. These experiences will sometimes improve us positively or degrade us negatively, regardless the marks are permanent. My process is a metaphor in the regard that once a mark is made, or an action is taken upon a negative or print, it will remain there for the entirety of its life. The marks and scars upon the negative when held in the hand are evident but not blatant. Once enlarged to a print these deformities amplify and distort, just as we often repress the marks that others have left on us; only to unexpectedly appear or affect oneself at a later time. Fingerprints strewn throughout the work serve as a subtle reminder that emphasizes the idea that we are all being touched and effected by one another.
